TWO LAWS - FLESH OR SPIRIT - Effects on Abram

By Rev. Shirley J. Cunningham

Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For (1) the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the (2) law of sin and death.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God

Romans 4:2-3 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Genesis 12: 2-3 Seven Promises given to Abram (1921 B.C.)

  1. I will make of thee a great nation,
  2. And I will bless thee,
  3. And Make thy name great;
  4. And Thou shalt be a blessing:
  5. And I will bless them that bless thee,
  6. And curse him that curseth thee:
  7. And in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

That ought to be a faith builder if anything could be. Would that build your faith and keep you going till it happened? It wasn't enough for Abram.

The enemy comes quickly to steal the word.

Gen 12: 12 We see him fearing for his life and caused his wife to lie about him being her husband. I guess he really did not believe the promise in Gen 12: 1&2

Genesis 15: 1-6 (1913 B. C.) Abram had been on a rescue mission in Chpt 14 to get his nephew Lot out of the enemies hands. While we are keeping the faith, we may need to be helping our family or others. It seemed to get him out of the faith as we find the Lord encouraging him in these verses. vs1. After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. 3. And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4. And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6. And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Looks like Abram finally has believed and walking in faith. NOT SO!!

Genesis 16:1 - 3 Sarai is now on the scene to help Abram with the fear and doubt. Now we come to the place where a whole nation of Ishmaelites will be born. Gen 16:12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Genesis 17: God reaffirms his covenant and also gives the Holy Spirit to Abram and Sarai. Verses 5 & 15 God changed their names and added the ah the breath of life of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; (21) And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. (22) And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. (23) Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; (24) But for us also to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; (25) Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
